South Korea to boost LNG use in power production, transport to cut pollution

South Korea is looking to switch the coal-fired power plants currently under construction in the country to LNG-fueled turbines as it looks to cut down on pollution. According to a joint statement by South Korean ministry of trade industry and energy with the ministries of environment, transport and finance noted that the government is looking to reduce the fine dust emissions by 30 percent by 2022. To cut the emissions further, the government will provide incentives for people switching to more environmentally friendly fuels. This will also include scrapping some 2.2 million diesel-powered vehicles by 2022. According to the statement, four coal-fired power plants that are in the early stages of development will be switched to using liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel. The country has alre...

Diplomatic Spat in the Middle East Has East Asia Worried

Is the Diplomatic spat of major Arab countries with Qatar spreading to East Asia? Most main customers of Qatari liquefied natural gas concentrated in Asia. If the geopolitical problem in the Middle East continues for a long time, there is a possibility of LNG prices to go up. On June 5, the eight Middle Eastern and North African countries including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates declared that they would sever ties with Qatar over support for terrorist organizations. The total volume of LNG exported by Qatar last year was 77.2 million tons, accounting for a third of the world’s supply. Of this, the share exported to Asia is 65.3 percent. In Asia, Taiwan and India rely more than 50 percent of LNG on Qatar. As for China, it’s LNG import from Qatar is second in...

Korea, China and Japan to Go Ahead with Formation of LNG Buyer Alliance

Korea, China, and Japan, which import half of all LNG in the world, will launch an LNG buyers’ club. KOGAS of Korea, CNOOC of China and JERA of Japan recently signed an MOU on LNG business cooperation. “Korean, Chinese and Japanese firms with big buying power will build partnership to enhance their negotiation power in purchasing LNG,” said an official of KOGAS. “We understand that the Korean government is having discussions on this matter.” A government official said, “If the three countries take the first step towards cooperation, the Korean government will also try to persuade China, which has relatively weak cooperative relations with Korea.” Korea, China and Japan import 55.54% of total LNG in the world. But the absence of this cooperation has weakened th...

DSME: first Arctic LNG carrier to test icebreaking capabilities during sea trials

Image courtesy of DSME South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding Marine Engineering (DSME) completed the construction of the first Arctic LNG carrier, the Christophe de Margerie.  According to the shipbuilder’s statement, the vessel, named after former Total’s CEO who died in a tragic plane crash at the end of 2014, is scheduled to set out for its sea trials in the Arctic sea to test its icebreaking capabilities during the week, after 30 months of construction. Following the completion of sea trials, the 172,600-cbm LNG carrier will be delivered to its owner, Sovcomflot, at the end of January. The Arc7 ice class Christophe de Margerie will be able to navigate in ice fields of up to 2.1 meters thick as its bow and stern are covered with 70 millimeters of steel plates capable of withstand...

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)

Natural gas is the most climate friendly of the fossil fuels releasing less CO2 than oil based products such as diesel. Natural gas is the world’s third most important energy source after oil and coal. It occurs naturally deep underneath the earth’s crust in many places around the world. Natural gas currently represents a quarter of the global energy supply. Natural gas is used in industry, in power plants, in district heating and in sea and overland transport. Throughout Europe, natural gas has traditionally been regarded as a form of green energy. There are many reasons to take an interest in natural gas. It has major advantages over other fossil-based energy sources – not least the fact that natural gas gives off fewer undesirable emissions. But also because natural gas is more efficien...

What’s the difference between CNG, LNG, LPG and Hydrogen?

The following is a brief summary highlighting the main differences of these fuels.  Much more comprehensive details of the fuel properties and compositions is available from other web sources and online databases. Compressed Natural Gas or CNG is stored on the vehicle in high-pressure tanks – 20 to 25 MPa (200 to 250 bar, or 3,000 to 3,600 psi).  Natural gas consists mostly of methane and is drawn from gas wells or in conjunction with crude oil production.  As delivered through the pipeline system, it also contains hydrocarbons such as ethane and propane as well as other gases such as nitrogen, helium, carbon dioxide, sulphur compounds, and water vapour.  A sulphur-based odourant is normally added to CNG to facilitate leak detection.  Natural gas is lighter than air and thus will no...

KOGAS Pushes into Vietnamese Market with Self-developed Piping Management Technology

Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) signed an agreement in principle (AIP) with Petrovietnam University (PVU), a subsidiary of Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PVN), in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, on Apr. 19 for in-line inspection (ILI) projects. Under the agreement, the two firms will jointly carry out Vietnam’s ILI projects, which have been monopolized by advanced countries, and expand the cooperation in mutual technical support and training programs. The ILI technology, which has been independently developed by KOGAS over a span of eight years, has been applied to gas pipes of over 2,000 kilometers up to now. Starting with the Vietnamese market, KOGAS is seeking to export its technology to global markets in earnest. The company’s ILI project in Vietnam is highly likely to succeed with local netw...

AVIC Shipyard to build four ropax ferries for Stena Line

AVIC Shipyard in China is to build four new ropax ferries for European operator Stena Line. Expected to be delivered in 2019 and 2020, the four newbuilds will accommodate around 1,000 guests and offer a full range of passenger services, as well as more than 3,000 lane metres for vehicles. The ferries will be powered by gas-ready engines, which can be fuelled by either methanol or LNG. All four ferries are intended to operate in Northern Europe. “During the course of the past 24 months our engineering staff has managed to develop a design that is not only 50% larger than today’s standard ropax vessels, but more importantly, incorporates the emission reduction and efficiency initiatives that have been developed throughout the Stena Group during the past years,” said Carl-Johan Hagman, managi...

New LNG Refueling Station for Inland Waterway Barges and HD Trucks at Doesburg

Cryonorm Systems, a Dutch company specialising in the development, design and manufacture of cryogenic vaporizers, small scale systems and plants for LNG, has completed the building of a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) filling station that will be used for the LNG fueling of inland waterway barges and trucks. The LNG filling station has been built for logistics provider Royal Rotra and is located near the new Rotra container terminal in Doesburg in the eastern Netherlands. Rotra is currently using 9 trucks fueled by liquefied natural gas and they are all fueled at the LNG station. By opening the station Rotra is stimulating sustainable mobilization of the multimodal transport chain with the use of LNG as an alternative and clean fuel. This innovation is supported by the European Union with fun...
