Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., a major South Korean shipyard, has set up the world’s largest industrial energy storage system (ESS) center at the headquarters in Ulsan.

Hyundai Heavy announced on November 23 that it has started operation of its new ESS with a capacity of 51.5 megawatt hour (MWh), the world’s largest industrial ESS in existence in terms of storage capacity, at the Ulsan headquarters. The new ESS center, a building with two stories and a total floor area of 1,180 square meters (360 pyeong) was built by Hyundai Electric, an electrical energy system and energy solutions provider, under an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract.

The new ESS has the capacity that can store power consumed by 15,000 people a day. It is one fifth of 270 MWh of the government’s goal this year for its ESS expansion project as part of its new energy industry policy.

Hyundai Heavy also established the factory energy management system (FEMS) that optimizes energy consumption by comprehensively controlling, managing and analyzing all the energies consumed at the plant, such as electricity, gas and compressed air, with information and communications technology (ICT).

Hyundai Heavy began construction with the investment of 2.6 billion won (US$23.99 million) in July in cooperation with the Korea Energy Agency (KEA), Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) Energy Solution and Hyundai Commercial and recently completed the new ESS and FEMS after five months of construction.
