What is the difference between a gate and a globe valve?

Gate Valve In gate valve, a gate slides between the seats of the valve. Movement of the gate is at right angle to the flow of fluid. By opening the valve, flow path is enlarged in a highly non-linear manner with respect to percentage of opening. Gate valve is normally used for isolation application where only fully close or fully open position is required. this valve is suitable where frequent opening and closing is required. the gate fully retracts in the bonnet. so, the pressure drops across the gate is less. Globe Valve Globe valve is widely used valve in high pressure steam and water line. movement is parallel to the flow of the fluid. Disc of the valve needs to move a small distance from its seat to get a full flow. the main advantage of this valve is that it can be used for throttlin...

What is a Plug Valve?

A plug valve is a simple type of valve that allows or blocks the flow of a liquid through a pipe. The plug itself is often shaped like an upside-down ice cream cone or a cylinder. A handle on top allows the user to turn the plug valve so it rotates and stops or starts the flow of liquid. A minimum of two holes, known as ports, must exist in the plug for liquid to flow. The ports are located on opposite sides of the plug, and when the plug is turned to the open position it creates a passage for the liquid to flow through. This arrangement of two ports is known as a 2-port valve. The pipe in which the plug valve is installed has an area for liquid to flow in and another for liquid to flow out. When the 2-port plug valve is turned on, the ports line up with the holes in the pipe and the liqui...

How to Select a Plasma Cutting Machine for your Shop

Choosing the right plasma cutting machine 1. Specify the thickness of the metal most frequently cut Most plasma cutting power sources are rated on their cutting ability and amperage. If you most often cut ¼” thick material, you should consider a lower amperage plasma cutter. If you most frequently cut metal that is ½” in thickness, look for a higher amperage unit. Plasma cutters operating at the limit of their current capacity may make poor quality cuts. Instead, you may get a sever cut which barely makes it through the plate and leaves behind dross or slag. Every unit has an optimal range of thickness – make sure it matches up with what you need. In general, a ¼” machine has approximately 25 amps of output, a 1/2″ machine has a 50-60 amp output while a ¾” – 1″ machine has 80 amps output. ...

Kogas to promote .5 bn LNG project in Mexico

The state-run Korea Gas Corporation (Kogas) is expected to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal and install gas pipe lines in Mexico that would be worth up to .5 billion in a package deal. Kogas said on Thursday that it has signed a memorandum understanding with the state government of Yucatan in southeastern Mexico to build a LNG terminal and gas pipe lines. The LNG terminal will be built in the port city of Progreso in Yucatan, and gas pipe lines will be installed between the terminal to cities such as Merida and Cancun to supply LNG gas. The project is expected to be worth in between billion and .5 billion. An unnamed official from state utility company said Kogas will promote the deal in package that includes LNG terminal contraction, gas imports and sales to end consumers such...

Samsung Heavy Industries Yields Global 3rd Position to Japanese Shipbuilder

Due to a chase of Japanese and Chinese shipbuilders, Korea’s three major shipbuilders, once the world’s top threes, are gradually losing ground in the market.  According to Clarkson, a U.K.-based research center, on March 20, Hyundai Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering won the first and second place with backlog of orders of 8.83 million CGT, or 204 ships, and 8.44 million CGT, or 139 ships, respectively, as of the end of February. Japan’s Imabari Shipbuilding came in third with backlog of orders of 6.96 million CGT, or 244 ships, followed by Samsung Heavy Industries with 5.08 million CGT, or 101 ships. Chinese shipbuilders are also included in the world’s top 10 list. Yangzijiang Shipbuilding ranked fifth with 3.31 million CGT, or 130 ships, while Shanghai Wa...

Imabari Shipbuilding expands further

No one seems to have told Imabari Shipbuilding that Japanese yards are on the decline. The shipbuilder, which has surpassed South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries into third place in terms of global orderbook lately, is embarking on further expansion. Imabari will reclaim around 50,000 sq m of land around its Saijo Shipyard to help it boost manufacturing of large LNG carriers and mega containerships. It follows on from news early last year that the leading Japanese shipbuilder would expand its Marugame shipbuilding base, adding an extra 600 m long drydock. This new drydock is expected to start operations in October this year. Imabari has also added a 1,200 ton Goliath crane at its Hiroshima Shipyard in order to build larger boxships. As well as the additional merchant shipbuilding capabili...

Minimum Required Documentation for Supplying Materials

Building plant requires a lot of paper works such as QCP, ITP, Manufacturing Procedure, Sub-vendor list, Mechanical Book, Installation Manual, Quality Assurance Record, MTC and so on. Due to the reason, some suppliers are having difficulties especially for start new companies. Each document has specific purpose of use, for example ITP(Inspection Test Plan) is to check inspection plan how, what and when we check during inspection. All documents must be submitted on each stage of production and confirmed by end user in advance. If we do not submit the documents on time, it could impact production lead time. Then you will face a big problem like delay or penalty. So, I hope this would be a small help to understand what kind documents we must prepare for participate in plant projects. Material...

Factbox: Sanctions on Iran’s oil sector

Iran and six world powers reached a nuclear deal on Tuesday, capping more than a decade of negotiations with an agreement that could transform the Middle East, and which Israel called an “historic surrender.” Under the deal, sanctions imposed by the United States, European Union and United Nations would be lifted in return for Iran agreeing long-term curbs on a nuclear program that the West has suspected was aimed at creating a nuclear bomb. International sanctions imposed to force Iran to curb its nuclear program have halved its oil exports to just over 1 million barrels per day since 2012, and hammered its economy. A complex range of restrictions have been imposed over several decades – the first of them in 1979, after Iranian students stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran...

Scrubber System

Scrubber system – The exhaust gas cleaning system (scrubber system) supplied by Deltamarin Floating Construction to Bore Ltd on a turnkey basis, has received confirmation of full compliance with SECA and IMO regulations (approved by Lloyd’s register and TRAFI, the Finnish Transport Safety Agency). After the 14-day dry docking, the open loop operation of the scrubber was in immediate use when the ship left the repair yard. The system delivered for the 13,500 DWT RoRo ship M/V Bore Song 12MW main engine (Wärtsilä 12V46F CR 12,000 kW) is based on DeltaLangh scrubber technology. This True Hybrid Scrubber system allows both close and open loop operation, and is now confirmed as meeting all present and forthcoming requirements. The scrubber’s water treatment technology limits water c...

NOx Reduction

Lean-burn engines operate under net oxidizing conditions to improve fuel efficiency by more than 25 percent, compared to conventional engines. Unfortunately, the added air causes the performance of conventional exhaust emission systems to deteriorate as the reduction of nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen is suppressed. The presence of nitrogen oxides (commonly abbreviated NOx) in the atmosphere can lead to smog, a health risk. For about 5 years, scientists have studied two extremely heat-stable, highly efficient catalysts for NOx conversion: Cu-SSZ-13, a zeolite material, and the isostructural Cu-SAPO-34. Recently, scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and University College London analyzed the state of the science and future research directions of these catalysts in an e...
