Repair completed at leak in trans-Alaska oil pipeline

FAIRBANKS—Workers have fixed a small crude oil leak coming from the trans-Alaska oil pipeline near an inactive pump station on the Richardson Highway about 140 miles south of Fairbanks. The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation described the leak, discovered in late May, as a slow “weep” coming from a fitting joint on a buried portion of the 48-inch main pipeline just north of Pump Station 10. The joint leaked one drip of oil per second into packing material around the fitting and, ultimately, into surrounding soil and gravel, the DEC said in a notice. The fitting was installed in the pipeline’s construction during the mid-1970s, DEC said. DCN International Diving and Marine Contractors recently developed and employed a unique method that made it possible to repair a crack in a 32-inch gas pipeline three times more cheaply than by installing a bypass. Engineers from the Dutch company came up with a completely new application for an existing concept. Thanks to a number of innovative alterations, DCN was able to introduce the method in the Java Sea, where an extremely critical repair could be carried out on a live operational gas pipeline. Welding Technology institute pushes for standards on imported steel

The Welding Technology Institute of Australia has written to all federal MPs and senators, requesting laws that properly support the local steel industry. The WTIA has requested mandatory standards be enforced for raw and fabricated steel imports, as well as procurement policies that support greater use of locally-made product. Geoff Crittendon, the organisation’s CEO, said cheap, low-quality imports needed to be dealt with, for reasons of safety and the continuation of the local steel industry. “Buying cheap, imported steel is not a cost saving if a structure fails, for example, because the steel has a high boron content, which weakens the welds,” Crittendon said in a statement. “If product data sheets are missing or falsified, a welder does not know to use extra precautions with high bor...

Even as global oil prices plumb new depths, the large-diameter pipe sector remains a bright spot for the steel industry in an otherwise down North American market. Evraz North America CEO Conrad Winkler, speaking with Platts this week during the World Steel Association’s 49th annual meeting in Chicago, said 2015 demand from the sector is likely to yield significant year-on-year growth for his company. “We think 2015 comes in 70-100% bigger than 2014 for large-diameter pipe,” Winkler said.
