Composition of drilling mud Water-based drilling mud most commonly consists of bentonite clay (gel) with additives such as barium sulfate (barite), calcium carbonate (chalk) or hematite. Various thickeners are used to influence the viscosity of the fluid, e.g. xanthan gum, guar gum, glycol,carboxymethylcellulose, polyanionic cellulose (PAC), or starch. In turn, deflocculants are used to reduce viscosity of clay-based muds; anionic polyelectrolytes (e.g. acrylates, polyphosphates, lignosulfonates (Lig) or tannic acid derivates such as Quebracho) are frequently used. Often used while drilling oil and natural gas wells and on exploration drilling rigs, drilling fluids are also used for much simpler boreholes, such as water wells. The three main categories of drilling fluids are water-based muds (which can be dispersed and non-dispersed), non-aqueous muds, usually called oil-based mud, and gaseous drilling fluid, in which a wide range of gases can be used. Drilling Mud Solids Control Circulation System

Solids control is a technique used in a drilling rig to separate the solids in the drilling fluids that are crushed by the drill bits and carried out of the well surface. Normally, a solid control system contains five stages: the mud tank, oilfield shale shaker, vacuum degasser, desander, desilter, and centrifuge. The shale shaker is used to separate big solids with diameter above 75μm, the desander treats solids from 45-74μm, and the desilter segregates solids between 15-44μm. Sometimes the desander and desilter are combined as one highly efficient mud cleaner. When air enters the drilling fluids, a vacuum degasser is used to separate the air. UDS orders new diving support vessel at Chinese yard

Singapore-based Ultra Deep Group ( UDS ) has booked a new multipurpose diving support construction vessel (DSCV) at China Merchants Heavy Industry (CMHI). The 8,000-dwt ultra deepwater offshore vessel is slated to be delivered in the first quarter of 2018, and represents the largest vessel that UDS is building right now. UDS said the latest order is in line with the company’s strategic plan to spearhead the development and operation of efficient, cost-effective diving and support vessels in the oil and gas industry. It added this is the second order for a DSCV at CMHI. HHI Joins Hands with Accenture to Develop Connected Smart Ship System

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and Accenture, the global digital business leader, are collaborating to design a “connected smart ship system” that will connect vessel operation information, on-board equipment and cargo status data, and port logistics information. HHI announced on Aug. 17 that it has recently signed a collaboration agreement to design the connected smart ship with Accenture at the headquarters in Ulsan. The connected smart ship will be developed using a combination of HHI’s smart ship technology, which was developed in 2011 for the first time, and Accenture’s digital and shipping industry experience.
