MUD Treatment System

Shale shakers are components of drilling equipment used in many industries, such as coal cleaning, mining, oil and gas drilling. They are considered to be the first phase of a solids control system ...

Drilling fluid : Classification & Mud engineer

Composition of drilling mud Water-based drilling mud most commonly consists of bentonite clay (gel) with additives such as barium sulfate (barite), calcium carbonate (chalk) or hematite. Various thickeners are used to influence the viscosity of the fluid, e.g. xanthan gum, guar gum, glycol, carboxymethylcellulose, polyanionic cellulose (PAC), or starch. In turn, deflocculants are used to reduce viscosity of clay-based muds; anionic polyelectrolytes (e.g. acrylates, polyphosphates, lignosulfonates (Lig) or tannic acid derivates such as Quebracho) are frequently used. Red mud was the name for a Quebracho-based mixture, named after the color of the red tannic acid salts; it was commonly used in 1940s to 1950s, then was made obsolete when lignosulfonates became available. Other components are a...

Drilling fluid : Type and Function

In geotechnical engineering, drilling fluid is used to aid the drilling of boreholes into the earth. Often used while drilling oil and natural gas wells and on exploration drilling rigs, drilling fluids are also used for much simpler boreholes, such as water wells. Liquid drilling fluid is often called drilling mud. The three main categories of drilling fluids are water-based muds (which can be dispersed and non-dispersed), non-aqueous muds, usually called oil-based mud, and gaseous drilling fluid, in which a wide range of gases can be used. The main functions of drilling fluids include providing hydrostatic pressure to prevent formation fluids from entering into the well bore, keeping the drill bit cool and clean during drilling, carrying out drill cuttings, and suspending the drill cutti...

Effective solids control can be attributed to the overall performance of all the components of the mud systems. Conditioning the drilling fluid with the goal of dramatically lowering maintenance cost, avoiding excessive chemical treatment and maintaining mud systems volume will decrease the chance of equipment failure, unnecessary high mud costs, hole and drilling problem. Drilling Mud Solids Control Circulation System

Solids control is a technique used in a drilling rig to separate the solids in the drilling fluids that are crushed by the drill bits and carried out of the well surface. Normally, a solid control system contains five stages: the mud tank, oilfield shale shaker, vacuum degasser, desander, desilter, and centrifuge. The shale shaker is used to separate big solids with diameter above 75μm, the desander treats solids from 45-74μm, and the desilter segregates solids between 15-44μm. Sometimes the desander and desilter are combined as one highly efficient mud cleaner. When air enters the drilling fluids, a vacuum degasser is used to separate the air. If no air is found in the mud, the degasser will work as a big agitator. All these stages are mounted on the top of the mud tank. After separating ...

Classification of Drilling fluids

There are several different types of drilling fluids, based on both their composition and use. The three key factors that drive decisions about the type of drilling fluid selected for a specific well are: Cost Technical performance Environmental impact. Selecting the correct type of fluid for the specific conditions is an important part of successful drilling operations.   Classification of drilling fluids World Oil’s annual classification of fluid systems lists nine distinct categories of drilling fluids, including: Freshwater systems Saltwater systems Oil- or synthetic-based systems Pneumatic (air, mist, foam, gas) “fluid” systems Three key factors usually determine the type of fluid selected for a specific well: Cost Technical performance Environmental impact Water-based fluids (WB...

UDS orders new diving support vessel at Chinese yard

Singapore-based Ultra Deep Group ( UDS ) has booked a new multipurpose diving support construction vessel (DSCV) at China Merchants Heavy Industry (CMHI). The 8,000-dwt ultra deepwater offshore vessel is slated to be delivered in the first quarter of 2018, and represents the largest vessel that UDS is building right now. UDS said the latest order is in line with the company’s strategic plan to spearhead the development and operation of efficient, cost-effective diving and support vessels in the oil and gas industry. It added this is the second order for a DSCV at CMHI. The DSCV, to be based on proprietary design Red Class 6027, is a DP3 multipurpose subsea ship equipped with a 400-tonne crane, 1,500 sq m open deck space and Flash Tekk’s 24-man twin bell Saturation Dive System. “We are thri...

HHI Joins Hands with Accenture to Develop Connected Smart Ship System

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and Accenture, the global digital business leader, are collaborating to design a “connected smart ship system” that will connect vessel operation information, on-board equipment and cargo status data, and port logistics information. HHI announced on Aug. 17 that it has recently signed a collaboration agreement to design the connected smart ship with Accenture at the headquarters in Ulsan. The connected smart ship will be developed using a combination of HHI’s smart ship technology, which was developed in 2011 for the first time, and Accenture’s digital and shipping industry experience. Also, it will manage the overall value chain of the shipping industry from maritime transportation, loading and unloading, and land transportation. The...
